The Los Angeles Chargers are in a great position right now.
They already have a franchise quarterback who’s still young.
They have some talented playmakers around him, plenty of underachieving talent on defense, and a proven winner as their new head coach.
On top of that, they also happen to have the No. 5 selection in the upcoming NFL Draft, perhaps the best thing they got from Brandon Staley’s tenure in charge of the team.
Chargers GM Joe Hortiz recently shared his thoughts on their plans for that selection.
Talking at the NFL Scouting Combine, he stated that no team is ever one player away, so at No. 5, they should always go with the best player available (via Dan W).
“With the 5th overall pick…it really is best player available…You take the best player available, because you’re never, ever, one player away,” Hortiz said.

There’s currently no consensus about what the Chargers will do with that pick or who might be the ‘best player available.’
They could go with Malik Nabers out of LSU, and the prospect of having him running routes for Justin Herbert is just mouth-watering.
Others believe they will lean towards revamping their offensive line.
Truth be told, anything can change for a team that doesn’t seem to have a huge need at any position but one that desperately needs players on cheap deals.
Perhaps the Chargers will be in a position to trade down and flip that pick into more assets.
Whatever the case, that seems to be the best problem a team like this could have.
