Despite the doubts and the criticism, the Miami Dolphins have always had Tua Tavogailoa’s back.
Their faith in him has remained unwavering since the very minute they benched Ryan Fitzpatrick amid a career-best season to give him an opportunity to prove himself.
That’s why it wasn’t much of a surprise to see them picking up his fifth-year option, especially after watching him post the best numbers of his career.
Now, both parties are negotiating a long-term contract to keep him in South Beach for years to come.
With that in mind, GM Chris Grier addressed the media to discuss the progress they’ve made, adding that they would continue talks about a new deal during the NFL Scouting Combine (via ProFootballTalk).
“Our goal is to try and get something done,” Grier said. “[Tagovailoa’s agent] Ryan Williams has been great. Tua has been great. We’ll see. There is no timeline on it. At the end of the day, you know how these deals get done. They are complicated deals and we’re building a team through free agency as well. We’ll work through it and see if we can get something done.

Grier said that everyone wants to get a deal done before the start of the upcoming campaign, but he did admit that sometimes these kinds of things can be dragged all the way into training camp.
The 25-year-old quarterback is coming off posting career-bests in passing yards (4,624), touchdowns (29), and completion rate (69.3%), and it was the first time he was able to play all 17 games.
His $23.1 million salary for the upcoming campaign is fully guaranteed, but he could be looking at more than twice that in his next deal.
The quarterback market resets almost every time a young gunslinger gets his new deal, and this might not be the exception to that rule
Then again, he might want to wait until after Dak Prescott gets his new contract before signing his.
