Several months into the regime of new owner Josh Harris, the Washington Commanders continue to make changes.
They recently dismissed Ron Rivera as head coach and replaced him with Dan Quinn, the Dallas Cowboys’ former defensive coordinator, while also letting go of offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.
On Friday, Adam Schefter tweeted that the team has informed center Nick Gates that he will be released when the new NFL league year starts on March 13.

Washington signed Gates last March as a free agent after he had spent his first four seasons with the New York Giants.
He was originally an undrafted rookie out of the University of Nebraska.
For the Commanders, making sure their offensive line is up to par is something that should be on their list of things to do this offseason, especially since they have the No. 2 pick in April’s draft and are seemingly set to use it on a possible franchise quarterback.
Second-year man Sam Howell threw for a decent 3,946 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2023, but he also threw a league-high 21 interceptions, and he doesn’t appear to be their long-term answer at that position.
In addition, he got sacked 65 times, which was more than any other quarterback.
The Commanders could also use upgrades on their defensive line, as well as another legitimate threat at the wide receiver position.
Harris and a group that includes NBA legend Magic Johnson purchased the team from the controversial Daniel Snyder last year, and fans hope it means the team will soon return to the type of success it enjoyed in the 1980s and early 1990s.
