A fun subplot heading into this NFL Draft is the fact that so many teams across the league need a new quarterback, and the fact that this rookie QB class has so many big prospects couldn’t have lined up more perfectly.
A lot of teams and analysts have a ton of homework to do, and the legendary Greg Cosell of ESPN is one of the best.
Cosell made an appearance on The Ross Tucker Podcast and shared his insights into North Carolina QB prospect Drake Maye, a player whom Cosell says has “tremendous talent” but warns that “inconsistent and erratic ball placement could be a problem.”
“You are dealing with a guy that has tremendous talent…a lot of detail and nuance that needs to be cleaned up…inconsistent and erratic ball placement could well be a problem,” Cosell said.

Cosell has been a Senior Producer of NFL Films for 44 years, so his opinion when it comes to evaluating prospects holds a lot of weight.
It’s a valid criticism of Maye, who threw nine picks in 2023 at UNC and took a step down statistically after his stellar 2022 campaign.
Maye naturally draws a lot of comparisons to Bills star QB Josh Allen, who had similar criticisms coming out of Wyoming due to his issues with accuracy and decision-making.
Maye has also shown to have a habit of drifting in the pocket, leading to unnecessary sacks that are not the fault of the offensive line.
With many mocks projecting Maye to go No. 2 to the Commanders, that’s an eye-opening problem since Sam Howell just got sacked 65 times behind their offensive line, which was 4th-most all-time according to Pro Football Reference.
While Cosell doesn’t deny Maye is a tremendous talent, the flaws he points out can’t be ignored.
