Heading into the 2023 NFL season, the New York Jets and their fan base had extraordinarily high expectations for the team and what they could potentially accomplish.
Much of these high expectations had to do with the addition of All-Pro quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who the Jets acquired in a trade with the Green Bay Packers during the 2023 offseason.
But, as many know, Rodgers tore his Achilles in New York’s very first game of the 2023 regular season and the rest of the year went downhill for the franchise after that.
After the way in which the 2023 campaign turned out to be disappointing for the Jets, ESPN’s Rich Cimini recently mentioned on Twitter how the team finding a new backup quarterback is likely something that will happen this offseason.
#Jets passing game coordinator Todd Downing in attendance for QB/WR/RB workouts. WR is an obvious need. Drafting a developmental QB is definitely on the table. Once Wilson is gone, Rodgers will be the only QB under contract.

After Rodgers went down, New York was forced to turn to Zach Wilson as the team’s new starting quarterback.
Selected by the Jets with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Wilson struggled in 11 starts for the Jets this past season, as the team was only able to win four times in the 11 games that he was in the starting lineup.
New York is expected to move on from the former No. 2 pick this offseason, whether it be by trade or release.
To replace his spot in the quarterback room, the Jets could decide to either use one of their selections in this year’s NFL Draft on a young passing prospect, or they could turn to free agency to see what experienced veterans they might be able to afford.
Whoever they choose, New York will be hoping to see them spending most of the 2024 season on the bench behind Rodgers.
