The weekend brought good news for San Francisco Giants fans.
The team secured the services of Matt Chapman, who has the potential to be a top-ten third baseman in baseball.
Like many of the deals being agreed upon at this stage of the year, Chapman’s pact allows him to become a free agent after the 2024 season if he desires.
However, he could also elect to opt into the contract for three more years, making this a potential four-year stint with San Francisco.
MLB insider Bob Nightengale broke down the pact and its unusual structure.
“Farhan Zaidi calls the Matt Chapman deal a win-win for the Giants and Chapman. ‘Really, he’s the perfect fit for our team.’ 2024: $16M, $2M signing bonus ($2M buyout); 2025: $17M player option ($2M buyout); 2026: $18M player option ($3M buyout); 2027: $20M mutual option ($1M buyout),” Nightengale tweeted.

With the $16 million salary and the $2 million signing bonus, Chapman essentially signed a one-year, $18 million contract with San Francisco.
From there, it will all be up to him, with the player options for 2025, 2026 and 2027.
The 2027 option is actually mutual: both parties would have to agree for the player to continue on the roster.
Chapman experienced a dip in power last year, going from 27 home runs in 2021 and 2022 to 17 in 2023.
He also hit .240/.330/.424 with a .755 OPS.
Oracle Park is notoriously suppressive of right-handed power, so he didn’t exactly land in the best spot production-wise.
Still, the Giants will be happy if he can at least replicate the 39 doubles he hit last year, with 15-20 home runs.
Most of his production comes on the defensive end, where he is actually one of the best in the league.
If he can have a modest rebound, at least, the Giants will consider his signing a success.
