The Denver Broncos’ failed two-year experiment with quarterback Russell Wilson is about to officially end.
They let him know on Monday that he will be released once the NFL’s new league year begins on March 13, but it won’t be the end of the repercussions of trading for him in the first place.
Per Anand Nanduri, the Broncos will have the largest dead cap hit in league history as a result with a whopping figure of $85 million.
Largest dead cap hits in NFL history:
Russell Wilson ($85M)
Matt Ryan ($40.53M)
Aaron Rodgers ($40.31M)
Carson Wentz ($33.8M)
Russell Wilson, again ($26M)To call this historic is an understatement. https://t.co/BeQztvGEin

The Broncos gave up five future draft picks and three players to the Seattle Seahawks in order to obtain Russell two years ago, and the hope was that they would immediately contend for a spot in the Super Bowl after several years of ineptitude.
However, it turned out they simply didn’t have the horses to be very competitive, and they ended up missing the playoffs in both seasons with the future Hall of Famer.
One of the draft picks Denver surrendered has turned into cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who made the Pro Bowl in 2023 as a rookie.
With Wilson about to be gone, they will return to the same rebuilding process they had been mired in ever since the retirement of Peyton Manning following their victory in Super Bowl 50.
As for Wilson, he is sure to be sought after by multiple teams despite being 35 years of age.
He threw for 3,070 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2023 after a very dismal 2022 campaign, and perhaps he has enough left in the tank for one or two more decent seasons.
