A few years ago, the NFL chose to make a change to the regular season by adding another game to the schedule, which didn’t sit well with the majority of the players even though the owners were happy to fill their stadiums for another game.
With a 17th regular-season game being a success for the league, it’s no surprise that the NFL wants to add yet another game to the regular season, as team owners and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell see more dollar signs.
As a result of the league seemingly leaning toward adding an 18th regular-season game, Kayvon Thibodeaux of the New York Giants couldn’t bite his tongue as he took to Twitter and made it clear that adding another game meant more money to be made off of sports betting.
Extra game = more sports betting.
Why would we settle for an extra week off, rather than a a profit share. Win/lose or draw owners & nfl personnel make money off gambling….lets talk about it.— Kayvon Thibodeaux (@kayvont) March 4, 2024
With sports betting becoming legal in 38 states and more to come, the money is pouring in for a lot of professional sports leagues in this country, with the NFL obviously benefiting more than most due to its popularity.
It comes as no surprise that the league would try to expand to 18 regular-season games, and it probably won’t stop there as it wouldn’t be all that surprising to see that number jump to 20 in the future.
Only time will tell how the NFL goes about its business in the years to come and how many regular-season games the league will be content with, especially with the players pushing back on the change to play more games and not being compensated for it.
