After 11 years as one of the best tight ends in the NFL, Zach Ertz still has some gas left in the tank and has reportedly found his next home.
The Arizona Cardinals honored Ertz’s request for a release last season and he subsequently signed with the Detroit Lions practice squad, but never appeared in a game.
Now, Ertz is reportedly teaming up with old head coach Kliff Kingsbury in Washington, as NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero is reporting that Ertz is signing a one-year, $5 million deal with the Commanders.
Three-time Pro Bowl TE Zach Ertz is signing with the #Commanders on a one-year deal worth up to $5 million, per source.

Kingsbury joined Washington as it’s new offensive coordinator this offseason and now has a familiar pass-catcher on his roster to help out his new quarterback.
It’s a palatable deal for the Commanders at just $5 million, and having a reliable tight end is always a valuable piece of the puzzle when bringing in a rookie quarterback, which many are expecting Washington to do with its No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft.
The three-time Pro Bowler is still only 33 years old and has shown to still be a consistent safety valve into his thirties, although injuries have started to become an issue with his 17 missed games over the last two seasons.
Earlier this offseason, the Commanders released long-time tight end Logan Thomas with little behind him in terms of depth, so Ertz also simply fills a need on this roster.
Washington could still look to add to the tight end room in the draft, and now they have the perfect mentor in place just like Ertz was in Arizona for Trey McBride’s recent breakout.
