Last week wasn’t particularly good for the Boston Red Sox or Lucas Giolito.
Just a few weeks after giving him a multi-year contract, the right-hander came down with a couple of elbow injuries.
He was diagnosed with a partially torn UCL in his pitching elbow and also a flexor strain, as it if wasn’t enough.
The team was asking for more opinions and debating between rest/rehab and surgery.
They have picked the latter, and the pitcher is now out for the season.
“Boston Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito will undergo elbow surgery on Tuesday, per @PeteAbe, ending his season,” MLB insider Bob Nightengale tweeted.

The nature of the procedure wasn’t revealed to the press, but if it’s Tommy John surgery, he will be out for part of the 2025 campaign as well.
It’s definitely awful news for both the pitcher and the team given the fact he signed a two-year contract and he will be rehabbing for most of it.
The Red Sox are now forced to go to the market and bring in a starter if they want to survive the AL East.
They already needed one before Giolito’s news, and now the sense of urgency is even more evident.
While Boston did extend Brayan Bello on a team-friendly deal, they also traded Chris Sale and let James Paxton go to the Los Angeles Dodgers as a free agent.
Their staff needs a pitcher or two, and it’s unclear if they will go to the market or try to solve the situation internally.
