The Chicago White Sox get two more years of top right-hander Dylan Cease before he hits free agency.
However, they are extremely unlikely to be competitive in those two seasons, and probably longer than that.
That’s why the idea of trading him now has always been there on their minds.
They haven’t found an offer they love, which is why they have held on to him to this point.
However, with the New York Yankees sending their own ace, Gerrit Cole, to get an MRI on his elbow, a need for a impact starting pitcher might arise in the Bronx.
Recent reports suggest they are unlikely to go after Blake Snell even in the wake of Cole’s potential injury.
However, MLB insider Bob Nightengale does report that the Yankees and White Sox have re-engaged in trade talks centering around Cease.
“The Yankees, while awaiting news on Gerrit Cole, have re-engaged with the Chicago White Sox and made a new proposal for ace Dylan Cease, but the new offer once again did not include prized outfield prospect Spencer Jones,” he tweeted.

The Yanks had already shown interest in Cease earlier in the offseason as they sought pitching help.
However, they were unwilling to include young outfielder Spencer Jones, seen as a surefire top-100 prospect by all publications.
The White Sox demanded he was in the deal, which is why conversations didn’t advance too much.
Now, the Yankees have approached the White Sox again about Cease, who had a disappointing 4.58 ERA in 2023 but was brilliant in 2022 with a 2.20 mark.
Will talks heat up at some point knowing that New York is still unwilling to add Jones to the offer?
We will find out soon enough.
