The Las Vegas Raiders are going through a lot of change so far this offseason, namely retaining interim head coach Antonio Pierce as head coach, letting star running back Josh Jacobs sign with the Green Bay Packers, cutting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, and signing star defensive tackle Christian Wilkins.
Another unsurprising move might go under the radar, but it represents the end of a surprisingly successful run over the past five years.
The Raiders announced today they released wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, who posted a heartfelt thank you message on X saying, “once a Raider always a Raider.”
Raider Nation, thank you for welcoming me and my family in the last 5 years. From Oakland to Vegas it felt like home.
I wouldn’t be the person I am today without my teammates and coaches inspiring me every single day. 5 years went by quick…… “Once a Raider Always a Raider” pic.twitter.com/GZ4cHUnlby— Hunter Renfrow (@renfrowhunter) March 13, 2024
Renfrow’s release is not shocking in the slightest, as he has fallen out of the rotation the last two years following a breakout 2021 season that saw him put up 103 catches for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns.
He played all 17 games in 2023 and only saw 37 targets, so it’s clear it was time for him to find a new home and see if another team can tap back into the skill set that made him a rising star just a few years ago.
Renfrow is only 28 and is hitting free agency for the first time.
He was a 5th-round pick out of Clemson and played the first five years of his career with the Raiders as they made their move from Oakland to Las Vegas.
Renfrow joins a fairly crowded wide receiver market that also includes newly-released Mike Williams, Calvin Ridley, Tyler Boyd, Odell Beckham Jr., and more.
Any team in the market for a reliable slot receiver will surely be picking up the phone to inquire about Renfrow’s services.
