For the last two seasons, Geno Smith has been the starting quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, and he has done a very solid job, as he has earned Pro Bowl appearances in both seasons.
But the Seahawks made a curious move on Thursday when they traded for Sam Howell in a deal with the Washington Commanders.
At first glance, one may think Smith would not be happy about this trade, but he took to Twitter to actually praise Howell.
“Baller,” Smith said.

As a rookie in 2022, Howell was promoted to QB1 in Week 18 when the Commanders decided to move on from veteran Carson Wentz, and in 2023 he threw for 3,946 yards and 21 touchdowns, although he led the NFL with 21 interceptions.
Per Adam Schefter, it is expected that Howell will compete with Smith for Seattle’s starting QB spot.
Seattle has long liked QB Sam Howell. Now, with Drew Lock signing with the Giants, Howell can compete with Geno Smith for the Seahawks starting QB job. https://t.co/jN59Iv8LSN

Smith went to Seattle in 2020 and served as a backup to Russell Wilson for a couple of years, then won the starting job over Drew Lock, the signal-caller they received when they traded Wilson to the Denver Broncos.
To that point, Smith was considered to be nothing more than a decent backup, but he led the league in completion percentage and threw for 4,282 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2022, earning him the Comeback Player of the Year award.
The Seahawks are hoping to return to the playoffs in 2024, but the rest of the NFC has gotten a little stronger, and that includes the NFC West.
The Los Angeles Rams unexpectedly made the playoffs last season thanks to strong performances from rookies Puka Nacua and Kobie Turner, and they could be even better in 2024.
