Two years ago, the Denver Broncos did what all teams in their position would’ve done.
They traded for Russell Wilson, who was finally available after spending his entire career with the Seattle Seahawks, and there should be no shame in that.
However, doubling down on that commitment without even watching him play may have been a rash decision.
They gave him a massive contract that ended up being a mistake.
The Broncos cut him and will now absorb the largest cap hit in NFL history over the next two years, all while the Pittsburgh Steelers got him for roughly over $1 million.
They agreed to terms on a one-year contract.
But as NFL insider Gerry Dulac pointed out, both parties intend to work out a long-term deal at the end of the season, according to his sources.
Russell Wilson signed a one-year contract with the Steelers for the vet minimum because the Broncos were paying him $39 million in 2024. But Wilson and the Steelers intend to do a longer deal at the end of the season, per sources.

That’s a more cautious approach than the one taken by the Broncos.
The Steelers have no risk with this deal at all.
If it works out for them, then they could consider signing him to a long-term deal.
If it doesn’t, then they had him at a fair price on a one-year contract.
That’s also why Justin Fields is such a big part of the equation now, as he’s going to put pressure on Russell Wilson to be at his best.
If he doesn’t pan out, the Steelers could already have a plan B in place to fix their woes at the quarterback position once and for all.
