Heading into the NFL offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers had one of the most interesting quarterback situations in the league, with the team not satisfied with a first-round exit in the NFL playoffs and wanting to get back to being a legitimate force to be reckoned with on both sides of the football moving forward.
Along with giving longtime head coach Mike Tomlin a vote of confidence by making it clear he’ll be the leader on the sideline for the 2024 NFL season, the team’s brass also made it clear that the results need to be better and that starts with the quarterback position.
That said, the team’s top priority heading into the offseason was finding an upgrade under center, which ultimately meant the end of Kenny Pickett’s time in Pittsburgh, as he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Ahead of Pickett getting traded to Philadelphia, the team brought in veteran quarterback Russell Wilson, who should be the starter right out of the gate, even though the team also brought in Justin Fields in a trade with the Chicago Bears.
Even though Wilson will almost certainly be the Week 1 starter in Pittsburgh, Nick Wright of FOX Sports believes he won’t keep his job as Fields will end next season as the starter for the Steelers, via “First Things First.”
“Russell Wilson will be the Week 1 starter, but I think it’ll be Justin Fields in Week 18 and the weeks leading up to it,” Wright said. “I don’t think Russ will keep this job.”

With Wilson’s career taking a turn for the worse with the Denver Broncos, it wouldn’t be surprising if Fields took over as the starter at some point during the 2024 NFL season.
Fields will have to prove himself in Pittsburgh, but so will Wilson, and there might be a better chance that the veteran is washed up rather than the 25-year-old being a downgrade.
