The 2023 Indianapolis Colts had one of the worst defenses in the NFL, ranking fifth-worst in the league and giving up 24.4 points per game.
Because of that, defense was obviously a primary focus this offseason, and Indy has already made noise by re-signing a lot of its big free agents such as Grover Stewart, Kenny Moore, Ronnie Harrison, Tyquan Lewis, and Genard Avery while also bringing in DT Raekwon Davis from the Dolphins on a 2-year, $14 million deal.
Former NFL GM Mike Lombardi said on “The Pat McAfee Show” today that the Colts also had interest in a couple of other high-profile defenders this offseason, saying, “there’s no question that the Colts had interest in L’Jarius Sneed and Danielle Hunter.”

Lombardi added, “there’s a fine line between kicking the tires and making an offer,” implying that the Colts’ interest in both guys wasn’t as legitimate as fans might have believed.
Kansas City Chiefs corner Sneed signed a franchise tag this offseason and has seen his name dangled in trade rumors left and right as he is in pursuit of a long-term contract, with the Colts and Tennessee Titans being two of the teams linked to him most often.
A deal has yet to materialize, as the Chiefs’ asking price appears to be quite high.
Hunter leaves the Minnesota Vikings after eight years and 87.5 sacks and signed with the Houston Texans for a two-year, $49 million deal.
The Colts still have about $23 million in cap space according to Spotrac, so if they are still looking to make another splash on defense, they have the means to do so.
