After another mediocre season, which resulted in another early exit in the NFL playoffs, the Pittsburgh Steelers made it abundantly clear that the team was tired of these lackluster results and is determined to right the ship as soon as possible.
Fortunately for longtime head coach Mike Tomlin, this didn’t mean that he was losing his job, but the pressure would certainly be on him to produce results from now on, as his job would likely be on the line during the 2024 NFL season.
That said, the team’s first order of business heading into the NFL offseason was to address the team’s main issue, which is at the quarterback position, as Kenny Pickett wasn’t cutting it.
Ultimately, the team decided to sign veteran quarterback Russell Wilson and trade for Justin Fields while shipping Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles.
With Wilson presumably being the Week 1 starter in Pittsburgh, the speculation has already started about how long that will last with Fields waiting for his opportunity on the bench.
Nick Wright of FOX Sports doesn’t think Wilson will make it through next season as the starter, via “The Herd with Colin Cowherd.”
“I know what Russell Wilson is right now,” Wright said. “I think he’s a QB who will be benched by the Pittsburgh Steelers.”

Although it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that Wilson can turn his career around in Pittsburgh next season after two disappointing seasons with the Denver Broncos, the Steelers clearly aren’t confident enough in his ability to do so, given the addition of Fields.
Fields being on the bench will add more pressure on Wilson to succeed, but if he doesn’t, there’s no doubt Tomlin will make the switch, especially with his job on the line.
