Replacing Tom Brady was not supposed to be an easy task for the New England Patriots.
After years of elite quarterback play from Brady, who is widely regarded as the best player in NFL history, the Patriots were slated to take a step back in production.
After all, they did assemble the most successful dynasty in league history with Brady at the helm.
While regression was expected, the past few seasons under Mac Jones have been worse than fans and the organization anticipated.
Since Brady’s departure, the team has only made the playoffs once, and they finished the 2023 season with the second-worst record in the league.
Now, the team faces a decision with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Most fans and analysts expect them to take a quarterback with this selection, but who that player will be remains to be seen.
Bill Simmons recently broke down this pick in a segment of his podcast, asking a few critical questions of the Patriots before they do so.
Simmons asked, “Why wouldn’t they want a foundation for those guys to walk into?”

Simmons might be excited about the prospect profiles of players like Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels, but that doesn’t mean he likes the situation they could step into in New England.
He believes the team could be setting up these young prospects to fail by not having solid pass-catchers around them in their rookie season.
The Patriots seemingly have a long way to go to play themselves back into relevance.
Can a newly-drafted rookie QB be their answer?
