With a 1-3 record after their first four games, the Cincinnati Bengals are off to a rough start this season, especially star quarterback Joe Burrow.
In four matchups this year, Burrow is averaging less than 185 passing yards per game, he’s completed just 57.6 percent of his passes, he’s only thrown two touchdowns, and his passer rating is an abysmal 69.1.
The Bengals quarterback has been dealing with a calf injury since the summer, and it’s had a huge impact on what he has been able to do and not do out on the field each week.
The Athletic’s Dianna Russini recently spoke to a league source who stated that Burrow’s calf injury has prevented him from extending plays outside of the pocket this season like he has been able to in the past.
Joe Burrow is battling. I asked one league source, “Can he really run and extend plays like he does outside the pocket?”
They replied: “Not really.”
However, the calf is improving, just going to be some time before Burrow can truly play like himself. https://t.co/bQKX0MIU0K— Dianna Russini (@DMRussini) October 8, 2023
On the schedule in Week 5 for Cincinnati and their banged-up quarterback is a matchup on the road against an underrated Arizona Cardinals team.
Heading into the season, most Bengals fans likely assumed this game against the Cardinals was going to be a cakewalk, but a win for the Bengals on Sunday is far from a guarantee.
Luckily, Arizona’s defense has some holes in it this year, so if there was ever a matchup for Burrow to get back on track, this could be the one.
After their four games, the Cardinals currently rank 30th in the NFL in points allowed per drive, 31st in yards allowed per drive, and 24th in total passing yards allowed.
Will this be the week that Burrow is able to return to the form that landed him a monster contract earlier this year?
