The New Orleans Saints recently made a roster move that could have a massive impact on the team’s defensive performance in 2024.
Despite suffering from severe injuries over the past several years, the Saints signed Chase Young to a one-year deal worth up to $13 million.
This might seem like a large sum of money for a player with an injury history, but the Saints see something in Young.
At his peak, Young was the Defensive Rookie of the Year and someone looked like they could be the reincarnation of Aaron Donald, and the Saints might believe he can get back to that place.
While they are excited about what Young might do in 2024, they have also protected themselves with his contract.
As reporter Ross Jackson has recently highlighted, there are many per-game roster bonuses for Young, and in his words, those are “likely to be earned.”
He did indicate that these bonuses will be charged to the team’s cap in 2024 but that they are being “prorated over five years.”
Interesting note on #Saints DE Chase Young’s contract. Not out of the ordinary, but an important detail.
16 of his 17 per-game roster bonuses are “likely to be earned” meaning they charge to 2024’s cap.
However, they’re being treated as a signing bonus, prorated over 5 years.

This is an atypical way to structure a contract, but the Saints are notoriously known for their ability to manipulate the cap in a way that few teams have been able to do.
If anyone is able to figure it out, it’s the Saints, as they have demonstrated over the past few seasons.
It will be interesting to see how this investment pans out for them and if Young can get back to his dominant ways, hopefully helping this defense be dominant again.
