As of March 22nd, the Dallas Cowboys have still not signed Dak Prescott to a contract extension.
Prescott is tied to the Cowboys through the 2024 season but could become a free agent after this year if the team does nothing.
While he isn’t necessarily Prescott’s biggest fan, Craig Carton recently indicated that this would be an egregious mistake for the Cowboys.
“Dak Prescott, regardless of how this year goes, becomes the No. 1 free agent of all time in the history of the NFL,” Carton said.
.@craigcartonlive believes the Cowboys are playing with fire by not extending Dak’s contract:

Carton believes Prescott going to free agency could be a nightmare for the Cowboys, especially since the team invested so much in him in 2024.
Prescott’s cap hit next season is $55.4 million, a massive number for any team to take on.
In recent history, the Cowboys have had a strong offense with Prescott at the helm, especially in the regular season.
If he continues that in 2024 and heads into free agency, many suitors will be interested in adding him to their team.
It would be in the Cowboys’ best interest to retain him, especially since he is familiar with the organization and how they run their offense.
If the Cowboys think they are struggling with Prescott as their quarterback, there’s no telling how much they would struggle in the first few years with a new signal-caller under center.
Having a solid quarterback is paramount to a team’s success in today’s NFL, given the increased reliance on the passing game, and while he hasn’t won the big game for the Cowboys, he has proven to be among the league’s best at the position.
