The 2023 NFL season continues to get worse and worse for legendary head coach Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots, with the team getting crushed for the second straight week after losing to the New Orleans Saints, 34-0.
The Patriots’ schedule to start the 2023 campaign has been brutal as they’ve had to face some of the toughest teams in the league right out of the gate, like the Philadelphia Eagles, Miami Dolphins, and Dallas Cowboys.
Although they’ve had their work cut out for them against some of the league’s elite teams in the first five weeks of the season, Sunday’s loss to the Saints was inexcusable, with the Patriots getting shutout for the first time this season against a team that is mediocre at best.
For the second straight week, starting quarterback Mac Jones has been benched by Belichick with the game out of hand.
After Week 5’s loss to the Saints, Belichick talked about pulling Jones for the second straight week and whether he’s considering making a change at the quarterback position.
“Yeah, there are a lot of problems. Certainly wasn’t all him.” Belichick said.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said he pulled Mac Jones because of the score.
Will Mac be the starter moving forward?

Belichick is about as stubborn as it comes in the NFL, as he tends to stick to his game plan until it gets completely out of control, which is arguably what’s happening right now, with the team only having one win on the season and Jones looking worse and worse under center.
The biggest difference for Belichick this year compared to the years in the past is he’s more than likely coaching for his job, which means every loss gets him closer to being unemployed.
If the team continues to struggle, Jones will almost certainly get demoted, as the team will hope for a spark from Baily Zappe in order to salvage the season or at least make things more competitive moving forward.
