The 2024 NFL season will be the first year the New England Patriots won’t have Bill Belichick roaming the sidelines for the first time in more than two decades.
Belichick largely struggled to deliver wins once Tom Brady left the franchise for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the 2023 NFL campaign was the last straw for owner Robert Kraft.
There were rumors throughout the year that Belichick would be let go and Kraft made the move official nearly as soon as the season ended.
The organization found Belichick’s successor in former linebackers coach Jerod Mayo while Belichick will be watching next year at home.
However, there are still numerous players who were coached by Belichick still in the league including defensive end Adam Butler.
Butler signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency and he detailed how scary it could be playing for Belichick via Maxx Crosby’s YouTube channel:
“When I tell you that man would strike fear in your a**, he will strike fear in your a**,” Butler said.
Butler has immense respect for Belichick as he calls him a legendary head coach, but his demeanor and demand for excellence led to some intense moments for him.
Belichick didn’t get to where he did by being lax with his players and Butler’s account of his former head coach tracks with his personality.
The modern NFL features a new wave of head coaches who seem to empower their players and thrive on collaboration, so if Belichick wants to coach again he’ll likely need to change some of his old ways.
