The New York Giants are coming off a dismal 6-11 2023 season that saw the team surrender the second-most sacks of all-time with 85, which led to quarterback Daniel Jones’ season ending prematurely due to a torn ACL.
It was a disappointing follow-up to 2022’s promising season that saw the team 9-7-1 en route to winning a playoff game.
That poor season has stirred up a lot of rumors that the Giants could look to select a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft, and Giants beat writer Art Stapleton of The Record doubts the possibility of Heisman Trophy finalist Michael Penix Jr. being a legitimate option at QB, saying “can the Giants really usher in a rookie QB who had four of his college seasons end by injury after what they have endured in two of the last three seasons with Daniel Jones?”
Here’s my thing with Michael Penix: can the Giants really usher in a rookie QB who had four of his college seasons end by injury after what they have endured in two of the last three seasons with Daniel Jones?
Penix may never get injured again, and I hope that’s the case.
But…— Art Stapleton (@art_stapleton) March 23, 2024
It’s a valid point, as Penix has already endured two torn ACLs and two severe shoulder injuries, which would be a tough sell to a fanbase dealing with Jones coming off a torn ACL of his own.
The Giants are in play for a quarterback with the sixth overall pick, with Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy being the most likely name associated with that area of the draft board, but Penix or perhaps Bo Nix could be viable options if the Giants chose to wait until the second or third rounds to go with a new QB.
It would be tough to watch Penix behind an offensive line that gave up 85 sacks after all he has been through, and Stapleton is right that he might not be the right type of QB for this team.
