It’s becoming clearer by the day that USC quarterback Caleb Williams going No. 1 to the Chicago Bears is no longer a prediction, it’s a spoiler.
Chicago has taken the scenic route to this destination, landing the top pick after trading last year’s No. 1 overall pick for the Panthers’ 2024 first-round selection, and recently moving incumbent QB Justin Fields to the Steelers to pave the way for Williams to take over despite the star prospect threatening to remain at USC in the past if he didn’t like the team that landed the first pick.
ESPN’s Mina Kimes summed up the situation very clearly in her recent appearance on the CHGO Sports Podcast, saying Williams “needs to look like it was worth it,” referencing the mountains moved to get to this point.
Kimes added that Bears fans should temper expectations regarding an immediate run to the playoffs and avoid calling for head coach Matt Eberflus to lose his job if the team doesn’t reach that goal, and instead stressed that the most important thing is that Caleb Williams comes in and looks like “the guy” right away.
If Williams quickly shows that he can be the franchise quarterback this team has lacked throughout its history, Bears fans will quickly move on from Justin Fields and stop wondering what could have been.
There’s no worse place to be in the NFL than when you don’t have “the guy” at quarterback, and as soon as you realize someone isn’t the guy, it’s time to move on.
Fields wasn’t the guy, and if Williams is, Bears fans won’t have to go through this again for at least another ten years.
