Needless to say, the Russell Wilson/Denver Broncos pairing was an unmitigated disaster.
The team is now eating an NFL-record $85 million in dead cap money to pay Wilson to play for the Steelers, and the Broncos now have no choice but to pick up the pieces and move on.
Analyst and former NFL player Ryan Clark has ripped Broncos head coach Sean Payton’s role in this mess, saying “if I’m a quarterback, and I’m worth anything, I do not go play for him.”

Clark added that Payton never treated Drew Brees this way and during his tenure with the Broncos, he has acted like a man who is still mourning the loss of his relationship with Brees.
These are some heavy words, but they have plenty of validity, as Wilson by all accounts still conducted himself professionally and did everything he could to deliver the Broncos a strong return on their investment.
Wilson still posted 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions last season, a marked improvement from his disastrous first season in Denver, and in many ways he was made the scapegoat for all the disappointment of the past couple of years while Payton has received next to no blame.
As of now, the Broncos have the league’s most uncertain quarterback situation with only Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci on the roster.
They are a prime candidate to select one of the many talented quarterbacks in this upcoming NFL Draft, as Payton will finally have his pick of the litter and get another crack at finding another Drew Brees.
