The surprise of the NFL offseason came this past week when Los Angeles Rams superstar Aaron Donald announced his retirement.
Donald mulled retirement the past few seasons, and it appears he was finally ready to call it a career after accomplishing everything he set out to do.
The Rams defensive tackle spent all 10 years of his career with the franchise, racking up numerous accolades and rewards and cementing his status as one of the best defensive players in NFL history.
There haven’t been many players like Donald who commanded attention on every snap because of his ability to single-handedly wreck plays.
Without Donald next year, the question of who is the best defensive player in the league is an interesting one.
Pittsburgh Steelers star T.J. Watt has a case to be the best and Donald acknowledged that he probably should have more hardware in his collection via his personal YouTube account.
“I felt like he should’ve won a couple more Defensive Player of the Year Awards, he kind of got snubbed a couple times, I ain’t gonna lie,” Donald said.

Watt won Defensive Player of the Year in 2021, but he’s been in the running every season that he’s been healthy.
A true terror off the edge, Watt is like Donald in that opposing offenses have to game plan for him or else he can take over a game by wreaking havoc.
Pittsburgh is expected to be a better team in 2024 after remaking the roster, and Watt will have a lot to say in the team’s success next season.
