For years, the New England Patriots were the team to beat in the National Football League.
The Tom Brady era got the fans used to a certain standard of competitiveness and greatness.
That’s why no one, not even Bill Belichick, was exempt or safe from criticism when the team stopped winning.
Now, however, new head coach Jerod Mayo wants the fans to give him the benefit of the doubt.
As quoted by Patriots beat writer Evan Lazar, the former linebacker urged the fans to be patient and bear with him and the front office as they rebuild this roster.
Mayo to the fans: “Hopefully, the fans understand we are trying to build this the right way…I’d just ask #Patriots fans for patience.”

Truth be told, it would be unrealistic to believe that the Patriots would be competitive again overnight.
Bill Belichick did a terrible job of putting this roster together, especially on offense, and while they have the No. 3 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, they’re not just one piece away from getting back on track.
Needless to say, landing a franchise-caliber quarterback should be the first order of business and the biggest step in the right direction, but they also need to bolster their skill player positions, and that might take a while.
Robert Kraft has made it loud and clear that he expects the team to get back to it’s winning ways now.
That might not be possible, but this team could still show signs of promise if they make the right decisions in the NFL Draft.
Still, they’re going to need a year or two to get out of the hole they dug themselves into.
