This has been a relatively quiet offseason for the Dallas Cowboys, but the one big question surrounding the team right now is whether they will give quarterback Dak Prescott a contract extension, and how much would one be worth for him.
There is a possibility they don’t give Prescott an extension, and instead let him hit the open market as a free agent in a year, then sign him to a new contract.
Chris Broussard said on FS1’s “First Things First” that the Cowboys would be better off letting that happen and signing him as a free agent in 2025 because it could save them some money.
“Is someone giving Dak $60M/year?! The Cowboys are better off signing him next year as a free agent.”

Dallas has other stars they need to give new contracts to, including wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and pass rusher Micah Parsons, and they need to think about saving their pennies, given the restrictive nature of the NFL’s salary cap.
Prescott is a good QB, but in his eight NFL seasons, he has known nothing but failure in the playoffs while underperforming there.
Last season, he played poorly in the first half of the Wild Card playoff round as the Green Bay Packers rung up a 27-0 lead over the Cowboys, and he threw two of his three touchdown passes during garbage time in the final six minutes of the fourth quarter.
Before that, however, he was a top MVP candidate for a minute, and on the season, he threw for 4,516 yards and a league-high 36 touchdowns while completing 69.5 percent of his pass attempts.
Despite his growing history of playing badly in big games, Prescott seems to be someone the Cowboys are serious about retaining beyond 2024.
