The Pittsburgh Steelers hoped Diontae Johnson would become their WR1.
Then, his failure to take a leap forward, and George Pickens’ surge, made them comfortable parting ways with him.
Nonetheless, one team’s garbage is another team’s treasure, and Dave Canales is thrilled to have him on board.
According to a report by Mike Kaye of the Charlotte Observer, Canales believes Johnson is ‘every quarterback’s dream’ because of his ability to create separation.
Canales has been watching Diontae Johnson for a while. He raves about his separation. “His release ability is second to none.”
“It’s a dream for any quarterback.” #Panthers

Johnson has the physical tools to be an impactful player wherever he goes.
To be fair, his quarterback situation in Pittsburgh was far from ideal, so his lack of production wasn’t much of a surprise.
Needless to say, things might not be significantly better in Carolina right away, as Bryce Young will have his second offensive coordinator in as many years, play behind a subpar offensive line, and have little-to-no help besides Johnson and the aging Adam Thielen.
Still, Canales is known for having a great offensive mind and being a bit of a quarterback whisperer, so the offense is going to be a major point of emphasis in his first year in charge of the organization.
Most of the focus will be on fixing Young and helping him be the same player he was during his days with the Alabama Crimson Tide, and people should know better than to count a rookie QB out after a bad first season.
Who knows? Maybe he and Johnson will end up being one of the best QB-WR duos in the NFC.
