Former No. 2 overall pick Robert Griffin III made headlines earlier in the week by suggesting projected No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams should take a page out of Eli Manning’s book and refuse to play for the Chicago Bears.
Manning infamously refused to play for the San Diego Chargers in 2004 and forced a trade to the New York Giants, where he wound up winning two Super Bowls, and RG III believes Williams should do the same, citing the Bears’ history of struggling to develop quarterbacks.
General manager Ryan Poles did not take kindly to those comments, saying: “It pisses me off a little bit to be honest with you, because we were hired to break a cycle,” per “The Pat McAfee Show.”

Poles also mentioned how his job in Kansas City was to do the same and break a cycle, which they did by winning three Super Bowls in five years with Patrick Mahomes under center.
The Bears ended the season on a high note and have had a strong offseason as they continue to shift the culture and modernize the franchise, bringing in star wide receiver Keenan Allen and locking in corner Jaylon Johnson long-term.
Williams will be stepping into a much better situation than Justin Fields stepped into a few years ago, and its refreshing for Bears fans to hear how forward-thinking this new regime is.
Griffin’s comments stung because they weren’t wrong – this franchise does struggle to develop quarterbacks, but Poles is well aware of this and is doing everything he can to break another cycle.
