Analysts are firing off hot takes left and right regarding the 2024 NFL Draft, as we have about a month left to dissect every aspect of the projected first players off the board.
The top three off the board for months have been projected to be USC’s Caleb Williams, UNC’s Drake Maye, and LSU’s Jayden Daniels, but in recent weeks a fourth prospect has been skyrocketing up the mock draft boards much to the confusion of many analysts and talking heads.
Analyst Nick Wright made an appearance on “The Herd” and expressed his uncertainty regarding Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy’s recent rise up the mocks, saying: “I guess he’s going to be a top-five pick. I don’t understand it.”

Colin Cowherd expressed similar concerns about McCarthy on the show, comparing him to former No. 2 pick Zach Wilson after McCarthy put on a similar display to Wilson at his Pro Day recently.
Cowherd noted that McCarthy threw 22 touchdowns in 15 games with every benefit at his disposal in terms of offensive line, one of the best running backs in the nation, arguably the country’s best defense, and elite coaching.
Wright added that he watched Michigan every week since they were the best team, and at no point did it look like McCarthy should be a top-5 pick, comparing him to the treatment Jimmy Garoppolo got with the 49ers where he wasn’t asked to do much.
Wright and Cowherd often spout hot takes just to stoke the flame, but there is real validity to these claims.
McCarthy’s rise seems out of the blue and unfounded, which will make for a fascinating first round in April.
