This year’s NFL Draft features a crop of potential-rich quarterbacks that hasn’t been seen in years, and it seems almost certain that Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels will be the first three players chosen in this year’s draft.
But J.J. McCarthy from the University of Michigan has seen his stock rise over the last couple of weeks or so, and he is generally regarded as the fourth-best signal-caller in this year’s draft class.
In fact, new Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh, who was McCarthy’s coach at Michigan, gave McCarthy some huge praise and said people are privately raving about the quarterback to him, per Ari Meirov.
“He plays quarterback the best of all the quarterbacks,” Harbaugh said.

While McCarthy didn’t throw the football as much as the top-three QB prospects this year, he completed 72.3 percent of his pass attempts in 2023 and threw 22 touchdown passes against just four interceptions.
He isn’t the most impressive physical specimen, but he is quick and agile and can get himself out of the pocket, while he seems to be adept at making plays and handling physicality while in the pocket.
Lately, there has been some talk that perhaps McCarthy could be one of the first three picks in April’s draft, or that one of the teams in the top three could trade down in order to take McCarthy and gain an additional first-round pick.
One thing seems certain though — Harbaugh’s new team is set at quarterback.
The Chargers have Justin Herbert, a bona fide rising star in the league.
They will have the No. 5 pick in this year’s draft, which they could use on one of the three headline-making wide receivers available, or on a top-shelf offensive lineman such as Joe Alt.
