The New England Patriots aren’t a good football team right now.
They lack talent on offense, and Jerod Mayo is an unproven head coach at this point in his career.
They’re definitely more than one good player away from being a competitive team, which is why some think they could be tempted to trade down in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Notably, that group of people doesn’t include sports analyst Bill Simmons, who recently took to Twitter to urge them to take Drake Maye with the No. 3 pick.
Good stuff in here. I can’t believe how much this offseason backfired on the Krafts. The Pats almost have to take Drake Maye at 3 (they should anyway BTW) just to change the narrative + have something positive happen. A trade-down after such an embarrassing winter would be nuts. https://t.co/HktzP3h218

He believes that’s the only way to salvage this offseason, and he might be right.
Maye looks like a potential star at the position, and the Patriots are desperately craving a quarterback right now.
Then again, one can only do so much with the hand one’s given, and the Patriots don’t have a solid offensive line, talented wide receivers, or an established run game, so Maye won’t have much to work with in his rookie season.
So, even if they end up taking him, perhaps it would be best for everybody involved to have him on the sidelines learning from a veteran like Jacoby Brissett for the first year of his career.
The Patriots need to get things right this time.
Things didn’t work out well with Mac Jones, and they haven’t found any sort of success since Tom Brady left town.
Hopefully, Mayo will be able to right the course of the ship for a franchise that was used to greatness for two decades.
