The San Francisco Giants had to make one of the toughest decisions of their year this past weekend.
Once deemed by some as Buster Posey’s successor, Joey Bart’s fall from grace has been a sad story.
On Sunday, the Giants decided to remove him from their 40-man roster, designating him for assignment.
“Joey Bart, No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 draft, has been DFA’ed by Giants,” MLB insider Jon Heyman tweeted.

The move gives the Giants a week to trade him or place him on outright or unconditional release waivers.
If someone claims Bart, he will join that club’s 40-man roster.
He doesn’t have minor league options remaining, which could be important when his future is decided.
If he goes unclaimed, he will likely be assigned to the Giants’ Triple-A team.
Odds are someone will take a chance on his talent and draft pedigree, though.
Bart was the second-overall pick of the 2018 MLB Draft.
However, he never lived up to the hype and is now 27 years old.
Bart, so far, has played 162 games in the majors, which is a full season worth of games.
The results have been subpar to this date, though, as he has slashed .219/.288/.335 with a 78 wRC+.
100 represents league-average performance when it comes to wRC+, so he has been 22 percent worse than the league average hitter.
That’s a great burden to overcome, especially considering he is not a great defender behind the plate.
He still has time to salvage his career somewhere, but Bart is looking like a major draft bust so far.
