Entering the season, it was evident that the Boston Red Sox needed pitching.
That was the case when the 2023 season ended, and the need became even more pressing when they traded Chris Sale and lost the recently signed Lucas Giolito to injury.
To the surprise of many, the Red Sox’s rotation and the pitching staff as a whole has been brilliant to open 2024.
In fact, they have been, statistically speaking, the best in baseball.
“The Red Sox lead the majors with a 1.49 ERA, the franchise’s lowest mark ever through 10 games. That is the lowest ERA for any team through 10 games since the 2005 Marlins (1.34) and the lowest for an AL team since the 1982 Angels (1.31),” Red Sox analyst J.P. Long tweeted.

To post a 1.49 ERA through 10 games is amazing.
When we are talking about 162 games in a season, 10 are not really that many but it’s still a remarkable accomplishment given the circumstances.
It implies that many of the Red Sox’s internal options are taking a step forward in 2024.
Tanner Houck is sporting a perfect ERA through 12 innings, Nick Pivetta is at 0.82, and Kutter Crawford and Garrett Whitlock are also below 1.00 for the time being.
The relief corps have been magnificent, too, with Kenley Jansen, Justin Slaten, Greg Weissert, and Josh Winckowski showing immaculate ERAs.
If these pitchers can maintain a similar performance level over the course of the season, we all should re-visit the AL East conversation because the Red Sox could definitely make some noise.
They are currently 7-3, just one game behind the Yankees in the division.
It will be very interesting to follow the Red Sox in upcoming weeks or months.
Can their pitching keep it up?
