The NFL Draft is just around the corner, and the scouts have done a lot of talking about J.J. McCarthy lately.
The Michigan product has benefited a lot from the past couple of weeks, shining at his Pro Day, getting Jim Harbaugh’s endorsement, and getting plenty of praise from scouts and unnamed executives.
That’s why sports analyst Chris “Mad Dog” Russo wanted to pump the brakes on this frenzy.
In his latest appearance on ESPN’s “First Take,” he stated that there’s just no way that McCarthy is now the fifth-best player in this draft class.
.@MadDogUnleashed doesn’t believe J.J. McCarthy is worthy of a top-five pick in the NFL draft

Of course, the small sample size and the offense he played in during college are concerns, but that doesn’t mean his tape and game won’t translate to the pros.
Scouts and people who assess quarterbacks for a living have raved about McCarthy’s poise, control, and mechanics, and believe there’s no NFL throw that’s too big for him.
He also stepped up big time when it actually counted, and Harbaugh should know a thing or two about quarterbacks and NFL-ready players.
Russo has rarely been impressed with a player, so his comments should be taken with a grain of salt.
And even if McCarthy isn’t the fifth-best player in this class or at least the third-best quarterback, he could still be quite helpful for a QB-needy team.
