A gambling addiction can cause all kinds of troubles with family, friends, employers, and even law enforcement.
If things get out of hand, it can get ugly really quickly.
That’s exactly what happened with Shohei Ohtani’s former interpreter, friend, and confidant Ippei Mizuhara.
Authorities, after conducting an investigation on the matter, concluded that Mizuhara stole $16 million from the Los Angeles Dodgers star’s bank account to cover for gambling debts.
Questions remain about the case, most notably how the player didn’t notice $16 million disappearing from the account.
Possible explanations could involve Mizuhara turning off notifications for transactions, which reportedly happened, and Ohtani’s obvious wealth.
The bottom line is that Mizuhara has been charged with bank fraud, and he was publicly accused by Ohtani of telling lies.
Front Office Sports revealed more details about Ippei’s reported gambling addiction.
They are rough.

The amount of money on losing bets is jaw-dropping.
However, the most shocking number here might be the number of wagers.
There are 25 months in the timeframe detailed by Front Office Sports.
It means Mizuhara placed about 760 wagers per month, or just over 25 per day on average.
If the allegations and the results of the investigation are accurate, the guy had a serious addiction and he used money (a lot of it) that didn’t belong to him to cover for the losses.
It means he is in deep legal trouble.
