Nick Wright believes the Houston Texans will be a better football team next season than this year’s squad that enjoyed a surprising 10-7 finish and a victory in their first-round NFL playoff game.
But how much better the team will be in 2024 remains to be seen, Wright said.
“First Things First” posted on Twitter a video clip of Wright, telling viewers he needs to “see a little more” before buying into the hype that Houston can compete with the upper echelon of the AFC, specifically naming the back-to-back Super Bowl winners in Kansas City.

“I really like C.J. Stroud. You have to be impressed by DeMeco Ryans. … I like what they’re doing. But are they real threats for the Arrowhead Invitational? I need to see a little more.”

The analyst pointed to an easy schedule, their ability to remain healthy throughout the season at key positions, and a “slightly above-average” offense and defense as the reasons Houston thrived in 2023 but could also struggle in the upcoming NFL regular season.
That withstanding, Wright was effusive in his praise of the Texans’ players and organization, telling his co-hosts that he was impressed by the team’s leadership with quarterback C.J. Stroud and head coach DeMeco Ryans running the show.
Houston is putting their additional resources into the team by surrounding Stroud with talent, Wright explained.
This offseason, the Texans have traded for Stefon Diggs, acquiring the Pro Bowl wide receiver from Buffalo.
Houston’s other moves have been to bolster the defense, adding multiple athletes to complete that unit’s depth.
For Wright, the front office’s moves and Stroud’s play are reasons to believe the Texans are an up-and-coming team that can contend for the AFC South division again this year.
