Tommy Pham was one of the most talented players still available in the free-agent pool until the start of this week.
The Chicago White Sox are signing him to a minor league contract, but with a few perks.
MLB insider Bob Nightengale detailed the complex pact.
“Tommy Pham will report to Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday and can request his unconditional release any time on/after April 25 if the White Sox don’t add him to their MLB roster within 24 hours of his request,” he tweeted.

Nightengale also reported that the player will earn $3 million as base salary, and has an additional $1 million in performance bonuses and a $500,000 bonus if he is traded.
That last scenario is entirely possible if the White Sox, who are not expected to contend and are off to a horrible start in 2024, get some nice performances from Pham.
There are more dollars to be earned, though.
“He’ll be paid $100K beginning with his 200th plate appearance, and $100K for every 25 plate appearances until his 425th PA,” Nightengale also wrote.
It’s not a bad deal for the 36-year-old veteran, who has plenty of experience and even played in the World Series last year with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
He may not be vintage Pham anymore, but he remains a highly productive player.
Last year between the New York Mets and the D-Backs, he hit 16 home runs, stole 22 bases, and finished with a .774 OPS.
The White Sox needed more talent to add to their mediocre lineup, and Pham is already one of their best hitters.
That actually speaks more about Chicago than Pham.
