Six-time Super Bowl champion head coach Bill Belichick was always known for being one of the craftiest to ever do it and was great at finding creative and unique ways to gain an edge on his opponents.
That mentality showed up in the draft as well, as Belichick knew how to be strategic when it came to navigating the draft board.
He spoke about this in his appearance today on “The Pat McAfee Show” when he was asked if he tried to screw the New York Jets last season in the first round when he traded back with the Pittsburgh Steelers, to which he replied:
“We only traded back a couple of spots, we were pretty confident that the Steelers were looking for a tackle and we were pretty confident that the Jets weren’t going to take a corner because they had taken [Sauce] Gardner the year before. We kinda thought that both teams were looking for the same thing.”

Belichick added that their target was Oregon corner Christian Gonzalez, who they eventually wound up selecting, and that they didn’t know that the Steelers were going to take the player the Jets wanted (Georgia OL Broderick Jones), but admitted, “I would say we weren’t heartbroken that had happened.”
It’s great to hear a legend’s perspective on a topic like this and learn more about what goes into the thought processes on draft day.
Luckily, we’ll get to hear from Belichick even more, as he’ll be joining the show again during the draft.
