After their Week 5 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Minnesota Vikings find themselves with a 1-4 record.
For a team that was expected to contend for the NFC North, this has been a surprising season for the fanbase.
While their record might be well under .500, analyst Mark Gunnels recently provided a silver lining to the Vikings’ season.
Gunnels made his case that the Vikings are “Tanking for Caleb Williams.”
I think it’s clear the Vikings are tanking for Caleb Williams. Out of all the teams with a realistic shot at the top pick, this is by far the best situation. They have the best WR in football and his former college teammate in Jordan Addison. This team just won 13 games a year…

Williams is seen as the prize of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Many believe he is a can’t-miss prospect, one of the best quarterbacks to come out in the last 20 years.
Kirk Cousins is in the last year of his deal and isn’t expected to re-sign after this season.
Adding a player like Williams would not only help the Vikings’ on-field production, but it would also help their cap situation.
A veteran player of Cousins’ stature demands a salary north of $30 million per year.
Even if Williams does go first overall, his salary will be significantly less than Cousins’.
Plus, adding a rookie quarterback would free plenty of cap space to sign Justin Jefferson to a massive wide receiver contract.
While Gunnels might make a solid case for the Vikings, they will likely need the No. 1 overall pick to secure Williams.
There are a few other teams that currently have a 1-4 record, and the Carolina Panthers are 0-5.
If the Vikings go all-in on Williams, they will need to stay on their current trajectory to have a chance at the highly-touted prospect.
