Most people praised the Houston Texans when they traded for Stefon Diggs.
Even despite his difficult character, he’s still one of the best wide receivers in the game, and they didn’t have to give up that much to get him.
The consensus in NFL circles changed drastically when the Texans agreed to void the final three years of his contract, thus making him an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.
When asked about that decision, GM Nick Caserio simply stated that, after talking to his representatives, they thought that was the right move to make, as it was in the best interest of his organization and the player as well (via Aaron Wilson).

Diggs comes with plenty of baggage and a bad reputation.
He left the Minnesota Vikings on bad terms, and his character issues followed him to Buffalo.
Also, his production took a major dip in the second half of the season when Joe Brady replaced Ken Dorsey as offensive coordinator.
Then again, perhaps the Texans felt like this would give him an opportunity to prove the doubters wrong and be extra motivated to be at his best.
On top of that, he could be quite thankful for the chance they gave him, not only to salvage his career but also to earn a big contract as early as next offseason.
If things don’t work out, the Texans would have overpaid for a single season of his services, but they would also be able to move on from him soon.
