After leaving the New England Patriots, the rumors linking Belichick to the Atlanta Falcons were as loud as ever, to the point where it seemed inevitable he’d be the next head coach of the franchise.
A recent report surfaced that suggested that inevitability wasn’t real, and we were all wrong about the relationship between Belichick and the Falcons.
ESPN’s Seth Wickersham and ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. discussed Belichick’s situation and said that Belichick didn’t know that Falcons owner Arthur Blank and his executives didn’t have him on their list of top three head coaching candidates, saying “I don’t think he knew until we reported it.”

If Belichick wasn’t in the top three, he never had a chance, which is completely different from the reports earlier in the offseason suggesting he was going to be the choice.
It would make no sense for a 6-time champion to even be on a list, as Belichick is a list of his own and if any team was considering him, he likely wouldn’t have much competition.
It’s unclear as of now how this report links to the other report of Patriots owner Robert Kraft reportedly warning Blank against hiring Belichick.
One has to wonder if Kraft is the reason Belichick wasn’t on the list of candidates, which is an unfortunate turn of events and a low move from Kraft.
Belichick will likely find himself on a sideline once again soon, perhaps as soon as next offseason, and he has a couple of new enemies to go after once he does make his return.
