The Indianapolis Colts have flirted with playoff contention for way too long now.
Their quarterback situation and never-stopping carousel have held them back more often than not, but it seems like they’re finally heading in the right direction.
Anthony Richardson wasn’t on the field much during his rookie season because of ailments and injuries, but he showed signs of promise and electric play when he was out there.
That’s why their top priority right now is to keep him safe and build around him, according to GM Chris Ballard.
Talking to the Indianapolis Star ahead of the upcoming edition of the NFL Draft, Ballard claimed that the team would go to great lengths to protect their young quarterback, adding that this was a stacked drat on the offensive side of the football (via ProFootballTalk):
“When you’ve got a young quarterback, you’ve got to protect him,” Ballard said, via Joel A. Erickson of the Indianapolis Star. “You want to continue to add playmakers around him.”

The Colts have an offensive-minded coach in Shane Steichen, and he did a great job in his first year in charge of the team.
They also have two solid playmakers in RB Jonathan Taylor and WR Michael Pittman Jr., and both of them will be under contract for years to come.
But with CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans looking like the best team in the AFC South Division, the Jacksonville Jaguars looking to bounce back, and the Tennessee Titans also entering a new era, they just can’t rest on their laurels.
Richardson is a promising player who could have a bright future in this league, but we’ve seen several potential stars fall short because of injury, and they don’t want to make the same mistake they did with Andrew Luck.
