Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin became a fan favorite overnight, and not just for his play.
He was a player on the rise in 2022, stepping up for the injured Micah Hyde and becoming an integral part of the Bills’ defense.
He logged 91 tackles (63 solo), six tackles for loss, two pass breakups, one forced fumble, and 1.5 sacks in 15 appearances.
Then, in a stellar matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals, he suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the field, being rushed to the hospital and taken into intensive care.
Shockingly, Hamlin was still able to fight his way back to the field, but after a near-death experience, he had to take things slowly.
Despite his diminished role, most people thought that he was a lock to win Comeback Player of the Year, not only for the emotional narrative that came with his comeback but also because he was still able to be productive for the Bills.
Even so, Joe Flacco’s late-season rally was enough to get him the award over Hamlin.
Recently, he admitted in an interview that he felt like he had been snubbed from winning the award, citing his competitive nature (Via Maggie and Perloff).
“I did at first, I ain’t gonna lie, I did… I’m a competitor myself. In any competition you put me in, I would win.”

However, he also stated that his comeback couldn’t be defined by a trophy.
At the end of the day, there’s more to life than winning a trophy, and Hamlin definitely knows that.
