For most of the draft process, the Washington Commanders have been expected to get Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 selection.
Not only does he look like the second-best player in this class, but he’s also just what the Commanders need, especially with Kliff Kingsbury in charge of the offense.
Nonetheless, there are always a couple of big surprises in the first round of the NFL Draft, and this might not be the exception to that rule.
That’s why NFL analyst Craig Carton stated that he wouldn’t be shocked if the Commanders pivoted and went with J.J. McCarthy instead.
Talking on The Carton Show, he pointed out that multiple coaches have fallen in love with McCarthy during the process.

He believes he could also be there for the New York Giants if they find a way to trade up, as Brian Daboll is reportedly very high on the Michigan product.
McCarthy has been a quick riser in this year’s edition, but perhaps going at No. 2 would be a bit of a reach, not to mention a major surprise.
There have been some reports about Daniels not wanting to play for the Commanders, but he and his camp have constantly denied that narrative.
Should McCarthy go at No. 2, we could expect the rest of the league to scramble to change their big boards, as one of the best prospects in this class would slip as a result.
Whatever the case, it seems like we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
