The Los Angeles Chargers made the move to draft Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt with the No. 5 overall pick in Thursday night’s first round of the NFL Draft.
Most were hoping the Chargers would go get a wide receiver after parting ways with both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams this offseason.
Here is what head coach Jim Harbaugh had to say regarding why Los Angeles picked an offensive lineman instead of a receiver.
“Offensive linemen we look at as weapons. When we talk about attacking on offense…Offensive Line is the tip of the spear,” Harbaugh told the media Thursday evening.

Harbaugh appears to have a really quality unit up front to protect quarterback Justin Herbert.
He has an All-Pro left tackle in Rashawn Slater, an All-Pro center in Corey Linsley, and now a first-round right tackle in Joe Alt.
However, he is really going to need to look at adding a receiver in the 2nd and 3rd rounds on Friday night.
The only receivers that the Chargers have on the roster are Josh Palmer, Quentin Johnston, and Derius Davis.
At best, those guys are role players.
Los Angeles holds pick No. 37 in the 2nd round and pick No. 69 in the 3rd round.
With good prospects in Georgia’s Ladd McConkey, Florida State’s Keon Coleman, and Washington’s Ja’Lynn Polk available, there is no doubt that the Bolts will have an opportunity to get the help that they need.
They cannot afford to mess around and miss out on addressing perhaps the most pressing need in the league.
