The wildest pick of the NFL Draft’s first round was the Atlanta Falcons drafting Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. at No. 8 overall.
It was especially crazy because they already signed four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million deal earlier this offseason.
ESPN analyst Mina Kimes was very confused by the pick and had this to say about it on NFL Live:
“I have a lot of issues with it…If I’m Kirk Cousins…I’m upset because I thought we were trying to win the NFC South and we missed out on the opportunity to upgrade a pass-rush that I think we all agree might be the worst in the NFL,” Kimes said Friday.

Realistically, Penix could take over in three years.
But Atlanta would have to take a massive cap hit by letting go of Cousins, and the rest of the offensive core, mainly Bijan Robinson, Kyle Pitts and Drake London, would all be older.
The Falcons also finished in the bottom half of the league in sacks (42) and run defense (118.2).
They clearly had a much bigger need along the defensive line than under center.
That is not at all up for debate.
After so much excitement was brought into the organization this offseason, it feels like it was somewhat sucked out with this very bold decision.
If head coach Raheem Morris can’t win a Super Bowl in these four years with this team, this pick could go down as one of the worst in team history.
That is especially true if Penix doesn’t pan out.
