Joe Alt has been around NFL talent for his entire life, literally.
He’s the son of John Alt, a former first-round pick and two-time Pro Bowler with the Kansas City Chiefs.
However, even though he’s always been destined and expected to be a pro himself, getting that call was a life-changing moment for him.
Recently, the former Notre Dame star admitted that he felt goosebumps and butterflies in his stomach when he found out he was going to go to the Los Angeles Chargers at No. 5, via SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Alt was considered the best offensive lineman in a class that featured plenty of elite talents at the position, and rightfully so.
He’s a powerful tackle and a mountain of a human being.
His combination of raw power, size, and elite hand placement make him an unmovable force in the trenches, and that’s just what the Chargers needed to finally keep Justin Herbert safe and sound.
Granted, some thought they would be better off moving down to get a wide receiver, especially considering they could also land another tackle later in the draft.
Then again, Jim Harbaugh knows that Alt is a generational talent and a guy who could anchor his offensive line for years to come, and with him also favoring the run game, this was a no-brainer pick.
The Chargers addressed their need for a wide receiver later by taking Georgia’s Ladd McConkey early in the second round, and alongside Herbert, they could be one of the best offensive trios in the game for years to come.
